Where Are Your Yellow Pages?

Can you remember the last time you got out the yellow pages? Or even the white pages? When you need a number where do you look for it? Most folks are using their smart phones or an internet search engine. Our need for information and phone number has not changed, but the method in which we look for this information has. Recently our father, who is over 65, came to visit. He wanted to find an Italian restaurant, and he asked where our yellow pages were. It took me a second to remember where they were, and if in fact we still had some. I am very guilty of chucking them in the bin the moment they hit the front steps. I found a set and he found what he was looking for in the book.

I must confess, I was never a good user of the yellow pages. Somehow the category I would search for was never there. Part of this is probably my own quirky way with language. For example if I was looking for bottled water distributors – I would look under bottle, and find nothing. Somehow, it was exceedingly difficult for me to parse the phrase and know to look under water, and find bottled water distributors. So, I just didn’t use the yellow pages.

Search engines regardless of your preference, do a pretty good job and trying to think like you think and thereby get you the best results for your search. Does it always work, of course not. Overall, we have moved from a book and paper search method for phone numbers to technological means. I suppose the next question, is “Do you still call people on the phone?”

Taps Microphone... Is This Thing On??

Every blog writer asks this question at some point. It may come as a shock to the newbie blogger, but as of 2011, estimates are there are 152 million blogs (www.geekygadgets.com). The chance that someone out there wants to hear what you have to say is a highly probable. The question we need to ask, is Who are we trying to speak to? Who do you see as the consumer of your blog. Writers whether bloggers or NYT bestselling authors, strategize the same thing, who is your customer? The web and proliferation of information has shown us that it is not the mass audience who is going to make your blog successful, it is the niche market. To be a well written, researched (if appropriate), and engaging are some surefire ways to establish your blog.

Once you have determined who your core audience is – you can begin strategizing ideas for regular content creation. Just for the record – your audience is NOT “everyone”. Just as everyone’s job in doing house chores, soon becomes no one’s job. The same is true for strategies that are targeting everyone. Determine who you want to speak to and with and then write your buns off!

The first fan for your writing is ….YOU. Write what interests you and meets the target market you are striving to engage. Be daring enough to make mistakes, and humble enough to admit them. When you take big risks, you will have big failures, but you will also achieve incredible results. Trust that what you have to say is important and the audience will let you know when it is.

To Bieber or Not to Bieber…the Adulation and Perils of Twitter

Two weeks ago our blog discussed the ups and downs of public personae and opinion postings on the social media tool, Facebook. This week toobusygals is analyzing Twitter. Is it really a useful business tool? As a small business or solopreneur should you devote time to this tool that morphs and changes at a rate almost too fast to contemplate?

If Facebook is the cocktail, networking party of the social media tools, than Twitter is the arena-sized sporting event or rock concert. What would you share with an arena full of people you may never meet, but you want to, may never communicate personally with or have anything in common with except for a virtual “click to follow”?

Small businesses have a common goal to make sure customers know who they are, where they are, and how they can help solve the customer’s problem. Twitter can be a highly effective tool for the solopreneur/small business owner. As with all social media, the first step is to decide the outcome or goal. Once you determine your goal, you can develop your strategy. The next step is to implement and review and modify as necessary.

Twitter is about gaining followers, following other Tweeters, and getting RT or retweets of what you posted by other folks on twitter. A Twitter account is FREE to set-up and relatively easy to use. Many applications exist to “help” with managing Twitter, as well as using the tools Twitter offers. You can update from your laptop or even your Smartphone.

Where do you start with building your Twitter Army? Well one of the most prolific topics on Twitter is Justin Bieber. Justin of teenage heartthrob fame – takes up to 3% of ALL twitter activity daily. If you haven’t heard of Justin Bieber he is the new “it” teen singer that has tweens across the globe all atwitter. He has what Ellen DeGeneres refers to as the Justin Bieber Twitter Army. Imagine thousands of tweens across the globe purposefully searching for anything Justin related and retweeting and posting to their hearts content. Suppose the info on Bieber is less than flattering? No worries his army will descend with a flurry of activity to the offending accounts. Bieber has created some Twitter controversy directly as well. A controversy arose regarding a posting of a friend-of-a-friend. A young man hacked the phone of a friend of Bieber, then posted on Twitter that he had Bieber’s phone number. In response to this, Bieber posted the hacker’s phone number on his Twitter. The post has since been removed, but in the meantime, the Bieber Army got into action and called the hacker for his nefarious activities against their beloved Justin.

To Bieber or not to Bieber? While I wouldn’t want to be part of the more salacious twitter activity of Justin’s fans, hackers, or even his own postings, that kind of high-profile activity would increase a business tremendously. Get out there, start tweeting, and see if we can get some of Bieber’s Twitter-space.

I recently read a article asking "Why Facebook Should Be Fired". The author, Mike Elgan poses an interesting question - Who should bear the brunt of our rapidly growing social networks information deluge? Employers can and do scout employees FB and tweets and can use this information. Calling in sick today - better not post how great the weather is at the ballpark - or it might get you busted!
Where is my 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech and e-mail!! Well - you can say/type what you want - but there can be far reaching ramifications.

So the first question for us as small business owners is - how do we use these formats - Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. I purposefully left LinkedIn off the list - because while you could post flippant, irrelevant, and tongue-in-cheek material on LinkedIn - the format is so dependent on resume-style information and writing that you probably haven't had any troubles with it.

FACEBOOK - your employer, customers, potential customers and people who know you professionally should NOT get personal posts from you. Ask yourself would you send a card/e-mail/flyer to your customers/boss with the information on it? If you wouldn't, or it makes you cringe even a little - don't post it. Why you ask - well there is no right to privacy of your postings other than the privacy settings you select from Facebook. And with "friend" groups getting over 500 - you are probably sharing information with people you might not be so free with in person.

Let's look at an example: I had a really rough day at my waitressing job. I post that I served scalding coffee to a grumpy lady after she complained the coffee was cold, too many times. Mean, but not criminal - worth being fired? Well 2 other waitresses and the assistant manager are FBfriends. They read my post, the assistant manager takes it to the manager and restaurant owner, I am let go from my job. Is this legal - I mean it was my FB account, on my own free time?!?! This is still America right?

Well it is legal for your current or prospective employer to search out the internet for information regarding you. Currently, this information can be used for termination in employment or even keep you from being hired.

Quite frankly social media formats have grown faster than the HR and legal systems ability to keep up with them. I think of FB and twitter as if they are really large cocktail parties, and anything I would be embarrassed or chagrined at doing/saying/sharing in that venue in front of/with EVERYONE, I should use the same judgment for my social media postings.

How big does a pumpkin pie have to be to become the world record? The current world record stands at 2,020 pounds (after baking). It was prepared and baked by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in New Bremen, Ohio. This huge pie was made on October 8, 2005. Over 5,000 people came to witness the event.

For the record: This pie was 2,020 pounds. It measured 12 feet, 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep. The pie recipe included 900 pounds of pumpkin, 155 dozen eggs, 62 gallons of evaporated milk, 300 pounds of sugar, 3.5 pounds of salt, 7 pounds of cinnamon and 2 pounds of pumpkin pie spice. The pie lost over 200 pounds while baking. The pie made over 3000 pieces. Baking began at about 6:00am. The pie was baked for over five hours in a custom made oven.

A new study looks at the link between shoes and foot pain. Women who generally wore high heels, pumps, sandals and slippers were at the most risk of hindfoot, ankle and Achilles’ tendon pain.

“I think women need to really pay attention to how a shoe fits and realize that what you’re buying could have potential effects on your feet for the rest of your life,” said the paper’s lead author, Alyssa B. Back from the Big Apple...what a trip!!!
We had a fabu time - Joy Rose and the whole crew from Mamapalooza and the ARM Conference were SUPER!!! Major Love to Lisa S.
Note to other festival vendors - when they say there will be wind on the Hudson River - they mean WIND - like Dorothy and "we aren't in Kansas anymore" wind -- thank heavens for gaffer tap and gallon jugs of water to hold our vendor tent down and secure.
Alexis and I cannot believe the support and interest in Blossom SPA Parties for Girls in NYC. We have almost 10 people interested in booking parties!!!
We have another 10 people interested in more information on the company.
And 5 people are interested in signing-up to sell!!
This is what we call a successful vendor event!!!
Oh did I mention we sold stuff too...

You can enroll for a 1-month trial membership for only a $1 and annual due are $89 - which of course can go towards professional development cost for your business - we must always be thinking of those tax deductions!!! DSWA has teleconferences just on this subject - how cool is that!!!

If you were pink slipped today, how would you make $ tomorrow?

If you are job searching this week, what income producing activities are you doing while you search?

Last week - did your job offer you a bonus, a chance to earn a trip, or the opportunity to drive a company car?

Direct Sales is not an easy business, or get rich quick scheme. It is a BUSINESS. Since August 2008, I have read, researched, talked to/with/about, attended, and finally joined 4 direct selling business opportunities. I left full-time traditional employment - BY CHOICE - well not entirely, my doctor and my health would no longer allow the 60+ hour work week with statewide and national traveling.

So why did I choose direct sales of all possibilities? You have the power to control your future. That is often thrown around like some sort of tag line, but seriously - I determine if I get paid, a raise, a day off, 1 vacation, or 2 - and who pays for the vacation. In my "old life" - this is what I call what my traditional employment 20 year career in non-profit direct services and management, I could work really hard, do valuable, laudable work, but I didn't control anything except my attendance, and maybe a cost-of-living 3% raise. Oh periodically, we might get a chance for a performance based raise, or someone might retire and an opening might become available for a promotion.

Obviously, sales and non-profits are vastly different. I had to address a very personal need, what to do to earn a living, and work around my health and schedule concerns. Owning and operating my own business and in particular direct sales allowed me to find an incredible opportunity to do that.

Here is what I didn't expect - the reward of sharing the business opportunity with others. How direct sales businesses allow for those of us, who NEVER imagined sales, let alone business as a profession, to dip our "toes" in the pool without risking all of our savings, retirement (if we have any left!). For a minimal investment, yes investment $200-$500, anyone can start in whatever direct sales company interests you - and believe me there is one for almost every interest - not necessarily tasteful either...

What an egalitarian option - no special training - or degree - in fact you don't even need a degree - doesn't matter where you live, what language you speak, where you came from, or what you did before - just that you want to DO this now. I am not Pollyanna about this, many companies have sketchy products, structures, and even totally stable companies may have dubious people involved, so each of us is responsible for our own due diligence. I could say "did you move into an apartment or house without looking into the neighborhood" - well, don't buy into a business without researching it as well. If you go to a unit meeting, and it feels weird - you probably aren't going to like it any more just because you paid to join up! Trust your instincts...

Once you do the research, meet the people, ask your PTB's...I believe and have expereinced that if you are willing to do the work, follow the advice of those in the program, and step out on faith, you can have a Plan B that might become Plan A.
And this is from someone who VOLUNTARILY left full time employment, with benefits, retirement, and security, in this economy...

Hey we don't call ourselves - too busy for no reason!

The PINK Party was a very interesting experience. Great social networking environment. I highly encourage anyone to attend such an event - be sure to clarify your expectations and outcomes prior to attending.

As an absolutely FABULOUS event - was organized by Ms. Tammy Vance - business woman extradorinaire. This event was the Home-Based Business Fair - held Saturday, March 7th from 10-4pm at 611 S. Hamilton Road. Why is Ms. Vance - FABULOUS, you ask, well...

Imagine you sign up for a vendor fair - planning to share information about your home business and the awesome opportunity to join with you, your team and your chosen company, imagine paying $50 dollars for the table - totally reasonable - then to your pleasent surprise - the host has printed flyers, made signage, and ordered a radio ad - WHOA --- just to get people to come - oh yeah so I can talk to them!!! (I was asked to chip in $15 for the radio ad if I could, and offered and apology for the after-the-fact "ask" - no problem by some of the "reasonable" things organizers have asked before - like sell tickets for me, or pay over $50 to put your flyer out at registration).

When we arrive to set up, Ms. Vance had tables for the vendors (no additional charge), some reserved from the Friday evening set-up (oh - set let's you do that too), but most still open for the taking. We selected a table, near the front that she pointed out would be the primary entrance - hey I like this 1st come 1st serve. As we set up our table, Ms. Vance, or Ms. Tammy as many were calling her - put the final touches on her space - and we were ready to go!

Overall I can't believe how many perks were provided at this event with little or no extra charges: WiFi, electric, tables, radio advertising, breakfast, a concession stand ($1 snack - no need to leave your booth!) Major PROPS to Ms. Tammy.
